Play for a Heart last year raised over $25,000; 93% of these funds went to support research in the pediatric cardiology field at The Children’s Hospital. The average contribution from most fundraisers in our area is around 85%. This kind of success could not have happened without all the amazing sponsors, volunteers, auction donations, players and participants. The event last year was by far our most successful with lots of laughter, good tennis, food, drink, weather and heart felt stories from the children who were there.
The format for our 2009 Play for a Heart Tennis Fundraiser will be very similar to last year. Mike Huddleston, owner of Tennis Plus stores, will run a modified world team tennis round robin. We hope to have at least 14 teams again, each one honoring a child that has congenital heart disease. If these children’s families are able to make the event, the team will have a chance to meet and get to know one of the children whose life you are making a difference by playing in this event. The teams will consist of 8 players, split evenly between men and women. There will be a men's, women's and mixed team tennis round robin played during the fundraiser. Based on each team's average USTA rating, we will most likely break the teams into groups based on an average USTA level. All levels are welcome!
One change from last year is each team will have a designated captain. We hope some of you will volunteer to become a team captain. By becoming a captain you will be an integral part of the fundraiser’s success. So “captains” start thinking about pulling your team together! However, please remember, we also welcome individual players and partial teams.
As we had last year, the event will have a silent auction, dinner from Dickey’s BBQ, and a wide variety of beverages (Corona Beer!!!).
